He may not want you to know this, but it is my moral obligation to get this out of the way: Jared Leto is the frontman of 30 Seconds from Mars. The pretty boy actor, better known for his roles in Requiem for a Dream and Fight Club, takes a break from romancing Hollywood It-girls in an attempt to prove that when actors try to sing, ridicule does not necessarily ensue. The band's UK debut single Attack is a courageous effort, but is it good enough to break the curse?
Despite kicking off with a catchy synthesised guitar riff, it soon becomes obvious that the track is, in short, hackneyed nu metal. Angsty lyrics, manic drumming, murmuring and screaming in equal parts: Attack fits the stereotype to a tee. The mildly electronic undertone prevents the track from sounding completely unmemorable, but also places it on the precipice of overproduction. However, obligatory criticisms aside, Attack is highly inoffensive and pretty listenable (shocking given the actor-turned-musician factor). This is in large part due to the fact that Leto can actually sing. The rawness and desperation in his voice evidences a steadfast commitment to his music. Not a surprise from an actor who starved himself and gave up sex with Cameron Diaz in preparation for his role as a drug addict in Requiem.
All things considered, Attack is a distinctly average track which nevertheless serves the purpose of showcasing the solid voice of the band's charismatic frontman. The problem is that the band's blessing could also be its curse. Given the right material, 30 Seconds to Mars could surpass expectations. However, even if it does, the band's success will always been riddled with the "It's good, for an actor's band" qualification. While Jared Leto has yet to cross over into one name fame territory, his dating exploits cement his position as a blogger's darling. The inverse relationship between Hollywood fame and musical acclaim is tried and true (e.g. Juliette Lewis/Juliette And The Licks: Keanu Reeves/Dogstar). If Mr. Leto seriously wants to have a crack at this music thing, perhaps he should take an extended vacation from his day job. After all, even if God does give with both hands, even he must favour one over the other.
