So where did this sudden preference for church organs in pop music come from? Chris Martin was guilty on Fix You, Muse made overtly religious overtones on Invincible, and now here's Arcade Fire letting the bellows take the strain at the start of Intervention.

As in the two previously mentioned songs, the tactic works - but here there's even more of a sense of ceremony and occasion. Win Butler sets the tone with a tense opening vocal that builds before the masterstroke, a key change of unexpected beauty.

Understated it ain't - but gloriously affirmative it is, and if you don't own Neon Bible after hearing this, the loss will surely be yours.
