Normally at this time of year people are turning towards more spiritual thoughts, what with Christmas and the birth of the little baby Jesus and all that. The salvation that Guile are talking about however is not a religious one - instead they quite obviously worship at the altar of rock and roll. My Salvation finds heads are bowed to the kind of filthy dirty rock and roll that wouldn’t think twice about selling its mum for a Harley.
Although My Salvation is a perfectly competent tune - as is B-side You Had It All - we’re going to have to wait a while to see whether Guile can deliver epiphanies. Musically the reference points are fairly obvious; all the boxes marked Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sonic Youth and Spacemen 3 are all ticked emphatically. Also ticked is the section marked 'recorded in my front room on a boom box'. It would appear that in pursuit of what I’m sure the band consider 'dirt' or 'fuzz', they forgot to record anything particularly well, and some terrible production really lets them down.
There are enough moments of riotous noise and carefully judged chaos to suggest that Guile may have an awful lot more to offer, but for now, this is something of a disappointment.
