A self-proclaimed 'bar band' from Brooklyn, with a sound not so much reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen as lifted wholesale from him, shouldn't really be big news in 2007. Isn't it all nu-rave and MySpace round these parts now?

Yet The Hold Steady have produced one of the most acclaimed albums of the year in Boys And Girls In America and this single shows why. Quite frankly, it's magnificent - a powerful, driving anthem with an opening line that namechecks Jack Kerouac and soars in a truly uplifting manner.

Yes, it's very Springsteen - you can imagine the Boss himself singing a line like "she was a really cool kisser but she wasn't that strict a Christian" - but the song's sheer energy and atmosphere make it a winner. Sometimes, grizzled 30somethings can have the coolest tunes.
