Having shelved their Yuletide plans for an enormous fourteen minute version of Frosty The Snowman, Iron Maiden instead decided to go down the tried and tested route of releasing a song off their latest album. So to help you cope with the disappointment you now no doubt feel, it fills me with some pleasure to tell you that this isn't half bad.
In fact, half bad would be underselling it a little. If you bought latest album A Matter Of Life And Death, you'll know what I mean. It would appear that Iron Maiden have found their feet again, and are finally back to what they do best - which is knocking out the kind of Metal you just don't hear any more.
Different World is classic Maiden. Three guitars now fill the sound out where once two seemed to do the job capably, and no doubt their amps go up to eleven. Nicko McBrain's drums are instantly recognisable, as is Bruce Dickinson's voice as he hollers his way through proceedings like an opera singer with his bits caught in a mangle.
So it's business as usual in the Maiden camp, but Different World is unlikely to pull in new punters for the band. Iron Maiden after all are a band that appeals to the younger fan or the die hard Metalheads. It's fairly improbable that your granny will pop out and buy this having heard it on the radio (if it actually gets any airplay), unless she has a secret stash of New Wave of British Heavy Metal albums stashed somewhere. It's a shame that this won't get the recognition it deserves, but as usual Iron Maiden will no doubt endure.
