Little Man Tate - What Your Boyfriend Said (Yellow Van Records/Skint)
UK release date: 9 June 2008
It's not really gone to plan for the bands picked up in the Arctic slipstream of the Monkey success story. Milburn have already called it a day, Harrisons' debut album eventually limped out after long delays and Little Man Tate survived one album with V2 before finding themselves a new label.
What Your Boyfriend Said is released on their own Yellow Van label and distributed by Skint, but that's about the only change for Jon Windle and company. It's the usual upbeat spiky guitar tune, with Windle's heavily accented vocals and sardonic lyrics about having an affair with a friend's girlfriend: "So it's your place or my place, hid under the staircase, waiting for his van to leave".
Yet what sounded fresh and exciting in 2006 just sounds a bit old hat in 2008. There doesn't seem to be much development here, just the same old stuff. No doubt they'll go down well at this year's festivals and the hardcore fans will love it, but you can only go on playing the same tune for so long.
