Luxembourg - We Only Stayed Together For The Kids (Dogbox)
UK release date: 12 June 2006
You kind of expect a band who have been known to describe themselves as
"too gay for radio, too tuneful for Hoxton" to have a good sense of humour
and, even though Luxembourg have unashamedly learned everything they know
about life and music from The Smiths via Suede, they
certainly know how to combine a riff with a smile.
Mind you, they lose points for objecting to the current musical climate
sounding like 'the 80s regurgitated by Mormons' as such comments are a bit
rich when they're simply plundering the same period's indie charts rather
that its mainstream, but overall we're going to let them off.
Why? Because We
Only Stayed Together For The Kids is the kind of melodic pop irony we like,
and lines such as "It's gentle and it's cruel/ that the money won't run out
until we do" deserve to be rewarded. And oooh look, it's time for the
B-side, A Secret Picnic, and they've turned into Joy Division. What
was that about the '80s again?
