One of the bounciest tracks from Richard Hawley's acclaimed album Coles Corner, Just Like The Rain warms like a crackling fire on a cold night.
For the myriad who have already bought the album, now short-listed for the South Bank Show Awards, two new tracks come with the package. Room With A View is yet another beautiful song in the now unmistakable laid-back Hawley style, the voice caressing as ever and the instrumentals echoey and nostalgic.
Hawley's voice has been compared with many, from Roy Orbison to Scot Walker, but I don't recall Johnny Cash being mentioned. The third track, Long Black Veil, was first recorded by Cash in 1964, and while Hawley's voice is softer at the edges, it perfectly fits the dark melancholy of the song and suggests a whole new genre that Hawley could make his own.
