There can be nothing better to listen to than Sebastien Tellier's new single Broadway, after running into an ex-boyfriend. Sentimental and nostalgic, Broadway takes you to a place where you can wallow in your feelings but then drags you back and sets your troubled heart free. Can a song really do this? It certainly can, and the maestro behind the music is the formidable Tellier.
Although this song isn't a patch on last summer's La Ritournelle, what makes Tellier stand head and shoulders above the rest is the lyricist's gift of being able to express what everyone feels but that few can nail down
And so we have Broadway, the backstory of which foretells the crashing fall of a relationships with the lachrymose refrains: "I should have called" and "I think I'm losing you". Yet sloshing around in your own sadness is not what this superstar DJ is all about and thanks to the huge symphony orchestra, tooting trumpets and multi-layered percussion, this track has a majestic, epic feel that pulls out the beauty in pain and makes something unique and wonderful out of our everyday love-ins and fall-outs. Broadway comes packaged with some pretty decent remixes- the Jake Bullit edit being a particularly fine, upbeat rendering. But if you really need some catharsis for your broken heart, the slow, stirring, Le Long de la Riviere Tendre, is the ideal soundtrack.
