Since 2005's wildly successful Takk thrust Sigur Ros into the musical limelight, question marks have existed over what direction the band would take with their follow up. The first cut from said follow up (if we discount Hvarf-Heim, the companion record to last years enchanting DVD documentary Heima) does indeed hint at a change in direction, less grandiose, dare it be said, more poppy.
Gobbledigook, taken from forthcoming album Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust (English translation: With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly) is built around a tribal rhythm with lashings of glistening acoustic guitar and a playful, multi-layered vocal from the ever-brilliant Jonsi Birgisson.
The sound is more stripped down, but still possesses the aching beauty and enchanting majesty that has categorised Sigur Ros's music since their career began. Gobbledigook hints at a more direct, upbeat, and jubilant album to follow, and is available as a free download now at the band's website.
