This Joy is the perfect title for an equally perfect debut single from singer-songwriter Stephanie Dosen, one of the latest additions to Bella Union's already impressive stable.
Raised on a peacock farm in Wisconsin and prone to composing songs during the feather harvest, Dosen's whispery vocals and fragile melodies dance like little shafts of sunlight on the translucent feathers of the contemporary folk scene, a worthy holder of the flame passed on to his signings by Bella Union founder and former Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde.
Hard though it will be to believe, This Joy really is one of the faster and more densely layered of the tracks on her forthcoming debut album A Lily For The Sceptre. Lilting piano intro and gently plucked guitars underpin a spectral vocal, conjuring up images of warm summer evenings as the sun goes down over fields of golden corn.
Backed by Overcome, a track only available here, buy it now and wait for the album, which is every bit as good as this, but longer. Bella Union, you are spoiling us.
