Michigan's Taproot formed in 1997. After several self-financed releases, they were wooed by Atlantic, and this single, Mine, is taken from their second album, Welcome.

Mine starts all heavy guitars and tripped up drums, and intriguingly, mixes the hardness of Alice in Chains, and the guitars of Rage Against The Machine, with a prog rock lushness akin to Yes, and, it works. It flows, it hooks, and the exotic harmonies hold. As it whooshes into the head-banging chorus, I'm still with it, enjoying the change of mood and tempo.

Taproot aren't just your average nu-metal headz. They're not genre-making, more genre-mixing, but they do experiment, morphing punk, grindcore, rap metal and seventies influences into something far more interesting and refreshing.
