Forget those sun-tanned frat punks like Sum 41 and Blink 182, if you want to hear the sound of 'punk' in 2005 well here it is. This is a suburban snarl, a sarky smile, a hood up, alco-pop fuelled middle finger to the chattering classes. So punk in spirit it could almost raise Sid from the dead.
Lady Sovereign steps up to the mike and stands loud and proud for her right to wear a hoodie. The beats are busy, brittle, cheap and nasty, and are perfect two-step fare. The warped pop genius of Basement Jaxx's shines through the production - Bollywood strings meets East End bling, the bass is a happy slap on the top deck of the night bus.
Lady Sovereign's flow is somewhere between ragga and hip-hop, and any song that includes the word minger in its lyrics is fine by me. A narky little delight of a record.
